- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 1 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Ezra,
let's be serious and answer the question that weighs heavily on everyone's mind.  Is there a God?  If this question is too vague or too controversial to talk about, or leans too much on personal opinon, answer this:  Can anyone really be sure of the existence/non-existence of God?  Is there substantial reasons to doubt both sides, and thus impossible to make strong claims either way?

Concerned human, sick of religion being the cause of needless death and destruction in the world.

Dear concerned human,

Michael Shermer, publisher of http://www.skeptic.com and author of The Science of Good and Evil, predicts that there is a probability of 67 percent that God exists. "Naked faith is what religious enterprise was always about, until science became the preeminent system of natural verisimilitude,"  he says, "tempting the faithful to employ its wares in the practice of preternatural belief."

A certain Stephen Unwin, in The Probability of God, determines the probability, beginning with a 50-50 maximum ignorance standard, then factors in goodness, evil, intranatural miracles (prayers) and extranatural miracles (resurrection).

Shermer reminds us that it is faith's inescapable weakness, and it's greatest power, that it depends on emotional factors separate from logic. Perhaps it is not religion being the cause of this suffering, but rather man's attempts to fit religion into a logical system of thought. And not to allow beliefs to be personal.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Dear Uncle Ezra,
On a recent sunny afternoon (around 3 p.m.) I went to the sundial on the engineering quad to tell what time it was...and I couldn't. The sun was so bright that it reflected off the inner face of the 'dial' and didn't allow for a shadow to fall from the gnomon. Because of the brightness of the dial and its curvature,
I also saw a number of incredibly bright, blindingly white, vertical stripes. Could we perhaps antique or sandblast or otherwise distress the inner face of the dial so that shadows from the gnomon will show up better? I like looking at sundials on sunny days.

Dear sunny,

Briefly, the sundial is part of a cylindrical mirror and it needs to be shiny!  You can visit Professor Emeritus Richard Phelan in his office to raise your questions about the sundial.  He says to tell you that "Although retired, I still have an office, 254 Upson Hall, and am normally here Monday through Friday from (approximately) 9:30 to 11:30.  Visitors are always welcome."

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Dear Uncle Ezra,
Why do we attend school on Labor Day?  Most other Universities enjoy this day off in celebration of Labor Unionization and workers, why can't we start a day earlier or have an extra day towards the end of the semester?
Thanks,
RM

Dear RM,

We're working on it.  The Educational Policy Committee in the Faculty Senate would like to find a solution to make Labor Day a holiday for all at Cornell.  Unfortunately, the problem is rather complex to untangle and they have not yet found a solution.  Classes meet for 14-full weeks, the minimum number of days required as part of our accreditation.  Therefore, if Cornell were to grant Labor Day off, it would need to be made up somewhere in the calendar.  The problem is further complicated because what we need is another "Monday" not just another day of classes.  There are many Monday-only classes so an alternative meeting time would need to be found for them.  In addition, the large science courses (such as Bio 101) have so many labs that they already meet every day of the week, and there isn't enough lab space to just double up the Monday labs on Tuesday, for example.  Some of the possible solutions they've suggested are considered undesirable or pose other problems, such as adding a day at the end of the semester, adding more Saturday classes, shortening Fall Break, etc.  So we're working on it, but it's a rather messy problem to solve.  Thanks for your patience.

Dear looking,

You can look for Sphinx Head in the archives, and that is all I can spill.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 6 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Hi,
this is the newly diagnosed and still devastated Bipolar person your responded to on 8/31.  Thanks for your quick reply.  I wanted to let you know I *was* in therapy for over a year but it always felt like we got nowhere because it was my only outlet some weeks... I was so in a state of panic, just working through the anxiety du jour, that we could never work on the "deeper" issues of my shitty childhood and stuff.  This is why the doc said no therapy until I was stabilized (by meds I guess) - it's actually doing more harm than good by giving me a place to get worked up but never resolve anything.  He said my IQ only added a complicating factor, I looked in your archives and saw there was at one time quite the debate about this.

NIMH was of no help to me.  I am still desperate for information, and although it was comforting to get a response, I still feel very alone in this.  I tried "outing" myself to the online anxiety group in which I participate and I have since been shunned... people basically don't know what to do with me.

My boss says she noticed I have been slurring my speech and wanted me to take a drug test.  I had no choice but to tell her about my mental illness or she would think I was on drugs or alcohol in the workplace, and I didn't want to be fired on top of everything else!

This is ruining my life.  I could barely function before and now with new meds there's this transition period.  With the new "label" and no information about it I am going even more nutty trying to understand myself and this diagnosis or even find someone out there like me so I know I'm not alone.  What else can I do?  I don't see the doc again for another three weeks and I have no social support.

Anyway, thanks for letting me vent, I wanted to follow up basically to let you know about the therapy thing and just to let others out there know about this Bipolar Spectrum because I guess it's an up and coming thing and people will need to know about it as more and more are diagnosed.....

A once very functional Type-A Cornellian

Dear Cornellian,

There should be a bipolar support group in a town near you.  In Ithaca, the Mental Health Association keeps a list of all support groups. There are also online groups. Some therapists run groups for specific problems, or you may find a generic mental health support group that would help.

You are courageous for "outing" yourself, as the stigma of mental illness is still very much present out in the world.  I'm not sure what you are interpreting as being shunned. You would have to explain what you said and what response you got to further understand the online experience.

The Americans with Disabilities Act should protect you in the workplace to receive accommodations for your illness. Talk with someone from Human Resources about that protection.

I hope you find kind souls and compassionate persons along your path.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 7 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Dear Uncle Ezra,
My 58 yo husband continually bites his knucles and his fingers are now quite disfigured.  He doesn't manke them bleed but gnaws at them until they are now calloused,
with hard lumps and bumps.  Can you explain this behaviour is it a form of OCD and is there a therapy to allieviate this behaviour  Many thanks, Jennie Leads

Dear wife,

I hope your husband can get the help he needs for this self-injurious behavior.  He may have an anxiety disorder that can be easily treated with medication and therapy to help manage the biting.  He can use stress-management techniques - from yoga, meditation or deep breathing to walking and other exercise. He will need to replace the biting with a more appropriate behavior, say squeezing a stress ball, chewing gum, or blowing through a straw.

He will also need to look at the source of his anxiety.  Does he know how to manage his anger, interpersonal issues and deeper historical issues? Communication skills training may also help him express his feelings and not let them build up inside.

I encourage your husband to go to a therapist who can get him on the road to good mental and physical health.  Hasn't his doctor treated these wounds and suggested counseling and behavioral therapy for him?  There are several online support and Q&A groups that you may find helpful. Good luck with helping him and helping yourself manage your concerns while he makes his own choices.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 8 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Dear Uncle Ezra,
This is a follow-up to a question that was posted through your column regarding Freemasons on campus and the Ithaca area. There are eight Masonic lodges  located within a 15 mile radius of the Cornell  campus. Two lodges,
Hobasco and Fidelity, are in  Ithaca. There is not a census of Masons on campus. About six years ago an attempt was made to identify Masons on campus and we did meet monthly for lunch at the Statler and other locations. There is interest in resuming such activity. You can contact: Tom Scott, tws4@cornell.edu; Chris Harbrant, chris_harbrant@hotmail.com; George Peter, or gp21@cornell.edu.

Dear Mason,

Thanks for the additional information.  Social groups are important for networking as well as for emotional and physical health, as they provide stress-relief from the all too hurried and transient connections we run through day-to-day.  I hope you can continue to meet.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 9 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

To the sage uncle of Cornell students -

I'm approaching my senior year in high school with mediocre grades thanks to years of apathy,
and I'm finding myself at a turning point a little too late in my high school career. I've just recently become interested in acheiving greater things, and I'm actually fascinated with the idea of attending Cornell. I visited the school recently and was extremely impressed with the rigorous lifestyle designed and experienced by the students there. Unfortunately attending Cornell may not be possible for me through the conventional path due to my grades,
but I was wondering if you could tell me alternative paths to acceptance into Cornell, or what the full spectrum of considerations are for the application process in addition to grades.

Thank you,
Discovering the Importance of Being Earnest

Dear Discovering,

Many students attend a community college (at less expense) or another college of their choice, demonstrate their ability to succeed in their field, and apply to Cornell to finish out their last two or three years with that coveted Cornell diploma. This path often allows students to reach the necessary maturity to allow them to focus and pursue their educational goal with the necessary devotion.  I hope you find a path that works well for you.

Dear Uncle Ezra,
I had a DNC about a month ago.  The dr put me on Ovcon 35 birth control pills.  After the DNC, I was to take 4 pills x 4 days, 3 pills x 3 days, 2 pills x 2 days, then take one pill a day. I took 2 pills per day for a longer time then I started taking one pill per day.  I am bleeding like a full period.  What should I do?  Also, I am very anemic.

Dear student,
You need to contact your helath care professional to get these questions answered.  Ask about the anemia, and research on the web what foods you can take that will help you increase your iron intake - broccoli, spinach, red meat, beans, iron-enriched cereals and whole grains, sesame seeds, pumpkin, dried fruits and others. I hope things go well for you.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 11 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Uncle Ezra,
My son moved home from college about 4 months ago. He has always had acne and other skin problems. He went back to the dermatologist because of itchy bumps on his feet, legs, groin area and arms.  They thought it was eczema, then follicitus, when the medication did not work, they told him he had scabies. The doctor did a biopsy, but we don't know the results.  The family has been treated. I have just gotten over having chronic hives due to an allergic reaction,
and continue to itch. The dermatologist said that will continue for awhile even though the hives are gone. I have been on the internet trying to inform myself. I feel the doctor is right about the scabies, even though the pictures I have seen are not similar to my son, but the rest of the family does not. Could it be something else?  My sister was misdiagnosed with scabies, after they realized what she had was eczema. After four months, should his body be covered with scabies? Also, can scabies go away then come back without being treated?

Thanks,
Concerned Mother

Dear mom,

Your physician would be the best one to observe and diagnose your son's problems. Has he followed the doctor's orders correctly?  Perhaps you can call back with the question of how long you should expect to wait for things to clear up. If you're not sure about the diagnosis, you may want to consider a second opinion.  I hope things get better soon.
