Dear Uncle Ezra,
I'm planning to stay in Ithaca this summer for the first time, and I'm not sure what to expect. I have housing figured out, but is there a place where I can find out what changes over the summer?
Specifically, I'm wondering what will be different in terms of food options, transportation (will my buss pass still work?), etc.
Thanks!
Dear Summer Ithacan,
Summer is such a wonderful time in Ithaca. The weather is usually fabulous and there is so much to do....Ithaca Festival, hiking and swimming at the State Parks, Grassroots Fest, winery tours, boat rides, Farmer's Market, live music on The Commons and Arts Quad. The list oges on and on.
If you remain a student over the summer, your bus pass will remain active. The Dining options will be listed on the Dining website. They do change, but there are many people on campus for the summer (high school students, summer school students, Cornall Adult University, etc. that there are a number of great facilities open for food.
Summer is also a great time to check out restaurants in Ithaca as well as taking the time to create some of your own culinary masterpieces or how about a picnic at The Plantations! Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dear Uncle Ezra,
My parents recently bought a box of old photos from an estate sale only to find an album from the early 1900s that once belonged to a Cornell student. Most of the photos are dated to 1916 and they show a lot of different places on campus, but not all of them are familiar to me. Is there anyone on campus who could look at these pictures and help me identify the buildings and events in them? There was also a letter in the album with the owner's name and my family and I are very curious to know more about him if possible. I know there is supposed to be an archive of material related to Cornell's history and it would be really cool if there was some way to learn more about the pictures. Any idea of who I could contact for some help?
Dear History Buff,
Yes, there are two people who would love to look through these photos with you; Elaine Engst, EE11, University Archivist, and Carol Kammen, ckk6, Cornell Historian and author. They both love Cornell history and have worked most of their lives exploring and documenting the wonders of Cornell. Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Hi Uncle Ezra,
How do you drop a major in arts and sciences? I know how to add one, but I've had second thoughts on one I've already declared. Please help!
Thanks!!!!
Dear Student,
If you would like to drop a second major within A&S, then you will need to contact the department and formally drop the major. Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Uncle Ezra,
Will any dining locations on campus be open during senior week? Will we be able to/have a place to spend our BRBs up until commencement?
Thanks a ton.
Dear Student,
Don’t fret. You will have opportunities to use every one of your last BRBs before graduation.
A list of all of the dining halls open during senior week will be posted on the Cornell Dining site within the next few weeks. However, the list below shows the dining areas that will be open during the commencement weekend. http://www.commencement.cornell.edu/PDF/DiningChart.pdf Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
To Uncle Ezra,
I know that all freshman receive bus passes for the year. When does this bus pass end. I am staying over the summer and would like to know if I can still use the TCAT busses for free. Thanks, Anya
Dear Anya,
New-to-Cornell students matriculating for the first time receive automatic, no-fee OmniRide privileges valid within their first academic year. OmniRide allows unlimited access to all TCAT buses in Tompkins County. Privileges are valid through August 31, 2012. You must remain a registered student to retain this privilege.
Also, please note that all registered students receive unlimited rides on all TCAT buses after 6 p.m. weekdays, and anytime Saturday and Sunday. Students pay no fare when using their CU ID card at the farebox.
Happy traveling! Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 6 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dear Uncle Ezra,
How do I get advertisements on the monitors in places like RPCC, Duffield, and WSH?
Dear Student,
If you would like your advertisements and media to be displayed on the monitors across campus, you should do the following.
- Format a PowerPoint slide to be 10” wide and 5.63” tall
- Send this slide as an attachment to media@cornell.edu
- You should copy Peter Van Do (ptv2) and Denice Cassaro (dac11) on the email Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 7 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dera Uncle Ezra,
I've noticed these translucent black plastic boxes on the wall in front of the study desks in the individual study rooms of Mann Library and I have no clue what they are. They plug into the wall and it looks like it could be a hidden camera or something. Do you have any idea what it is?
-Patron of Mann Library
Dear Patron of Mann Library,
These black boxes you speak of are not hidden cameras or anything exciting like that. They are covers for the Ethernet cords to protect them from being pulled out. Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 8 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Hi Uncle Ez,
Does the Cornell Store provide notary services for students? If not... then where can students go on campus for this? Grazie mille, Craig

Dear Uncle Ezra,
I am currently beginning the process of internally transferring to to either bioengineering to CALS or the School of Engineering. I have always been curious about who exactly makes the decisions about acceptances for internal transfers. Is it the Faculty Director of Bioengineering, a special transfer committee of the target college, or even the original Admissions Committee that accepted us as freshmen?
Faithfully yours, Curious
Dear Curious,
Once you have met all of the requirements of the college you have chosen, then the admissions committee will decide on your acceptance. Each college only has one admissions committee, which would have been the one to accept you as a freshman.
If you have any questions about transferring to the CALS program, visit their website at
http://Cals.cornell.edu/admissions.
You can visit the engineering school’s website for more help at http://www.engineering.cornell.edu/admissions/. Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 10 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dear Uncle Ezra,
Why does Cornell very rarely promote from within? Over the past few years there have been numerous promotions available but the employees that work within the unit are lucky to even get an interview. "EDITED FOR CONFIDENTIALITY" Could you tell me if this is the new Cornell way or is something going on here that needs to be addressed? Thank you. Wondering
Dear Employee,
This is a very good question, but a hard one to answer. Last year about 45% of the positions that were opened were filled with current Cornell employees. In addition, about 10% of our employees were promoted in their positions. So, while there are clearly times when individuals from outside of Cornell are hired, and times when they are hired when current Cornell employees are interested in the same positions, it is also the case that we are hiring and promoting from within.
This question is about a particular unit of the university and so there maybe issues specific to that unit that should be explored. If you have not already done so, you may want to speak with the HR person who supports your area. I hope this information is helpful. Uncle Ezra |
