Dear Unkle Esra,
I am obsesseed with a guy who I have liked for one year. We have been somewhat involved, but he is presently seeing another girl.  I know he is physically attracted to me but I can't seem to tempt him away form his present girl.  I need suggestins on what to do.

                                      signed:   Obsessed!!!!!!!!

Dear Obsessed
This must be frustrating!  It sounds like the guy knows that you like him, and he occasionally responds to you.  I'm wondering how much he cares for you. As nice as it is to have someone you like respond to you in kind, sometimes, as in your case, it is not your choice to make.  It sounds as though this guy has already made his choice.  I know this thought could be very painful, but if he wants a romantic relationship with you, he probably wouldn't be with another girl.  It's one thing to be physically attracted to a person, but another to invest the time and emotions necessary for a romantic relationship.  Would it be possible for you to try to build a friendship with him?
It's sometimes very limiting to talk about things like this on a computer. Maybe it would be helpful for you to talk to someone about the pain and loneliness this situation is causing.  If you don't feel like talking to one of your friends or parents, why don't you call EARS?  They can help you sort through your feelings and figure out what you want to do.  Their number is 255-EARS and they are open Sun-Thurs 3-11pm and Fri & Sat 7-11pm.  Good Luck.

DEAR EZRA,
I'M PRESENTLY FAILING HALF OF MY CLASSES IN ILR.  WHY IS THE GRADING IN THIS SCHOOL SO MUCH HARDER THAN IN ARTS AND AG WHERE I HAVE TAKEN COURSES AND WAILED.  THIS SCHOOL IS SO MUCH TOUGHER THAN ANY OTHER SCHOOL HERE AND SHOULD BE GIVEN MUCH MORE RECOGNITION. PS  HOW DO I PETITION TO DROP A CLASS OR TWO?

                                                     UNHAPPY ILR-IE

Dear ILRie,
I'm sorry to hear that you are having a difficult semester, and I'm glad you are looking around for some way to improve things.  I don't know for sure that grading is so much harder in the ILR school, although I do know that all students find some subjects more difficult than others.  Perhaps ILR subject material is just more difficult for you than, say, government or calculus or communications would be, whereas ILR courses might be easier for some other people.  If you are NOT enjoying the courses you are taking because of the difficulties you are having, you may want to consider transfering to another major.

In order to petition to drop a course or two, you need to go to 101 Ives, the Office of Student Services, to get instructions, and then to the instructors of the courses you wish to withdraw from.  Before you do that, however, you may want to talk to the people in the Office of Student Services to explore all of your options.  Another helpful place to go might be the learning skills center in Olin Hall, where they help students with academic problems of all types.

Wishing you the best of luck,

Uncle Ezra
