UEZRA, HOWS LIFE INSIDE THIS COMPUTER?
HERE'S MY QUESTION.
THROUGH THE NEWS, I'VE HEARD THAT ITHACA IS TRYING TO HOST THE EMPIRE
STATE GAMES IN 1989. SINCE I WAS A VOLUNTEER FOR THE ESG IN 1984 AND 1987 IN
SYRACUSE, I WONDER IF ANYONE DOWN HERE COULD USE MY HELP.
THANKS.
ME
p.s. not many freshman know about you, shouldn't you do something about it
since freshman have a lot of questions about this place. Just something
to think about. Thanks again.
Dear Me, Life inside this computer is fine. It gets a little confusing at times
with all the circuits and everything, but...No, actually I don't live in the
computer, but sometimes it feels like it with all the work it delivers to me.
However, it's a great medium for "Dear Uncle Ezra", and a super way to
reach a lot of the Cornell community.
About the Empire State Games:
Yes, Ithaca is trying to host the next ESG
series. There's been a tremendous push on the part of many local agencies to
hold the event here. We certainly have the facilities. And, if the ESG comes
to Ithaca, we're going to need the people-power, too. When you were
volunteering at the games in Syracuse, there were over 60 organizational
committees and 2000 volunteers! Herb Brewer, the Director of the Tompkins
County Chamber of Commerce, was thrilled when he learned that there are people
who already want to volunteer. Since he is in charge of trying to get the ESG
to happen in Ithaca, he's the one you want to contact about helping out. Either
call the Chamber, 273-7080, or stop in at the office on 122 West Court Street
to sign up. It seems freshmen are hearing about me via word-of-mouth. That's a mixed
blessing. I like hearing from people and answering questions and giving advice
- I've been learning a lot more about Cornell and our great people in the
process - but recently I've been feeling a little overwhelmed by the number of
letters I haven't had time to answer. So I think I'll let people find Uncle
Ezra in their own unique ways - I don't seem to need much advertising. Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
UNCLE EZRA, WHAT SHAPE IS THE MANIFOLD TRACED IN 4-SPACE BY THE SET OF ALL LINEAR
TRANSFORMATIONS THAT ARE NEITHER ONE-TO-ONE NOR THE ZERO FUNCTION?

DEAR UNCLE, WHAT WAS THEMAIN CAUSE FOR THE GROWTH OF HUMANISM DURING THE 14TH CENTURY?
I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF THIS WAS ANSWERED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
THANK YOU, I.C.C.A.A.R.G
Dear Friends, These questions sound suspiciously like homework assignments to me.
Sorry...I graduated a while ago; now the only homework I do pertains to my job,
community activities, and "activities of daily living" (cooking, cleaning,
paying bills, etc.). Some days even those are more than I can handle, so I'm
not quite ready to take on yours, too. Have you done the reading for the course? If not, that's a good place to
start. Otherwise, if you're really having trouble with these questions, see
the course professor or TA. Other alternatives include the Learning Skills
Center, 375 Olin Hall, 255-6310, and one of the libraries.
Some years ago I wrote my own reminder about homework, which I'll share
with you: Avoiding ====> Failure
Procrastinating ====> Short Term Gain ====> Long Term Loss

Dear Uncle Ezra, Regarding the Seven Saver Points (p.156 above):
What happens to unused points
at the end of a semester/year/lifetime? What are the advantages of using them?
and by the way, where can they be used?
Starving Freshman
Dear Starving Freshman, The Seven Saver Points system is a Cornell Dining program that lets students
essentially "create" their own breakfast and lunch meal plans. In addition to
giving you more eating "freedom," one nice advantage is that the 7% New York
State tax is not applicable - hence the name. Seven Saver can be used at all
Co-op dining halls as well as the Ivy Room, Red Bear Cafe, Entrepot, and
Martha's - twelve units in all. If you have any points leftover at the end of
the Fall Semester, they are carried over to the Spring term. Any points
remaining at the end of the Spring semester, however, are non-refundable. Uncle Ezra |
