Dear Uncle:
My landlord refuses to pay me back the deposit. Would you please tell
where I could find help? If I have to bring him to the court, what process do I
have to go through?
Your quick answer would be deeply appreciated.
the tenant
Dear Tenant
A quick answer it is. Legal problems can get pretty sticky, and without
some guidance you could easily find yourself running in circles (or worse).
Happily, free help is readily available.
The Off-Campus Housing Office in the Dean of Students Office has a lawyer
available one afternoon each week to help students with problems like yours.
His name is Chuck Guttman, and you can make an appointment to see him by
calling 255-5373. He can help you decide whether or not to take your landlord
to court and can answer any other questions you have. Good luck. Uncle Ezra Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dear Uncle Ezra, I just noticed Hamming it up's letter and your response to him/her in the
4/19 posting (APR88, p.90)... Just a point of clarification... The Cornell Amateur Radio Club has not been
recently formed. We've been around at Cornell since around 1916, actually
forming as a club and acquiring our current location in Barton Hall in 1952.
But, as you say, we are there for the Cornell community, people like Hamming it
up, and..... perhaps YOU Uncle Ezra? Where'd you learn about Best of
73's....Hmmmmm? :
-) Anyhow, anyone who is interested should get in touch... Thanks...
Alex, KA2ZOO
President, CARC
Dear Alex, Thanks for setting the record straight. I hate to slight any
organization, especially one that's been around for such a long time. As for
"Best of '73's", well, my actual knowledge of Ham Radio is pretty limited.
However, when I was ten years old I visited an uncle who was a licensed operator. He was on the set at the time and asked if I wanted to try.
I was fascinated...but too shy to say anything. When it came time for him to
sign off, I agreed to say goodbye. And that is where I learned the term, "Best
of '73's". See how useful Uncles can be? Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
DUE:
Just a note in response on page 100 of the april listings. I once
heard that there is no such thing as a silly question; only silly
mistakes from not asking relevant questions! Take care,
jk
Dear JK, How right you are! I'll pass that on to my high school geometry teacher
when I go back for reunion. Uncle Ezra - * - * - Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dear Uncle Ezra:
How far in advance should one call hotels in Ithaca in order to get rooms for
graduation? I tried in September to reserve hotel rooms for my family but
found most hotels fully booked. Also, how else can I put my family up in
Ithaca for commencement?
Sincerely,
Graduate
Dear Grad, I checked with some area hotels and found that most of them started
accepting reservations for the 1988 Commencement the day after the 1987
Commencement. How's that for advance planning? However, don't panic. Housing
options are still available. There are a few on-campus rooms in Dickson and
Sperry Residence Halls. You can reserve them by calling Residence Life at
5-5359.
The folks at Information and Referral in Day Hall have a listing of all
the hotels, inns, motels, and bed & breakfasts in the area. Stop by to pick up
this hand-out and also ask to see if they know of any other options. Sometimes special groups like the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra and local P.T.A.s
open up their homes as informal Bed and Breakfasts at this time of year in
order to raise funds for their organizations and alleviate the housing crunch.
Also, check the Classified ads in the local newspapers as graduation day
approaches. You'll be surprised to see how many people sublet their apartments
or summer homes just for that weekend. Finally, don't give up calling those
local hotels:
you never know when there might be a last minute cancellation.
Congratulations on your degree! Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Uncle Ezra, Are there any Scottish folk musicians playing in Ithaca or surounding
district in the next couple of months? thanks Piper Patron
Dear Piper Patron, I'm glad to hear that you're taking time out during this hectic period
to enjoy yourself. Listening to music can be a great way to relax. An
excellent way to find folk music of all kinds is by tapping into the CUINFO
folk music listings:
type MUSIC FOLK. When I did, I found that on April 25
there was Scottish Country Dancing from 8-10 pm at 213 South Geneva Street. If
you didn't make this event, you can try accessing the listing yourself to find
out about future performances.
Another way to find the folk music you want is to contact Mark Cushing and
Alanna Fitzgerald, two local musicians who specialize in Scottish music. You
can reach them at 273-9295. Have a bonny time! Uncle Ezra Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 6 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Hi there...
I'm a grad student in Pomology, and I'm not really pleased with my selection
of graduate programs. It's not the faculty or the other areas of my life; I
just hate the material. I'm thinking that I would be happier in B-School since
I was an undergrad finance major, and I enjoyed that stuff. What is involved
in transferring from 1 area of the grad school to another area of the grad
school? Is there a Division of Unclassified Students for grads, and what kind
of grades do I need to do a direct transfer? If I were an undergrad, I would
need a 2.7 to transfer between schools directly, but that's all I have found
out. Is there a deadline for tranferring? Thanks for your help. -- Future b-student-to-b
Dear B-Student-to-B, Hi to you, too! Choosing a career direction is certainly an important
decision. It makes a lot of sense to decide to change programs in order to
pursue what you feel you will enjoy. We often do best at the things we enjoy
most. I called the Johnson Graduate School of Management Admissions Office to
see what transferring into their program would entail. Unfortunately, there is
no such thing as a direct transfer. Instead, you will have to apply as any
regular student would. It's possible, however, to petition through the Business
School Registrar to get credit and academic standing for the graduate work you
have already done. The deadline for next year's fall semester has already
passed, but you can still call the Admissions Office at 5-2327 to get
information about applying for the following semester or year. You should also
talk to your faculty advisor about your decision.
It can be frustrating and challenging to consider beginning a new graduate
program, and you will probably be more confident of your decision if you
investigate the Business School program thoroughly. It could also help to talk
to other students to find out their opinions of the program. I wish you the
best of luck in your new endeavor. Uncle Ezra - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Question 7 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
